Tenzing review – reconstruction of first summit of Everest puts Sherpa at the centre of the story

Genden Phuntsok infuses his portrayal of Tenzing Norgay with charm and innocence, while Tom Hiddleston delivers a suitably candid performance as Edmund Hillary.

This is a well-meaning, engaging, though occasionally soft-edged film featuring National Geographic production values and CGI hazards on towering peaks. It centers on the triumphant 1953 Mount Everest expedition, where the final ascent was accomplished by Nepalese-Indian mountaineer Tenzing Norgay and New Zealander Edmund Hillary.

Tenzing, a former Sherpa guide whose unmatched knowledge of the mountain and outstanding climbing skills earned him full team member status, is played by Tibetan actor Genden Phuntsok, with Hillary robustly portrayed by Tom Hiddleston. Screenwriter Luke Davies and director Jennifer Peedom aim to restore Tenzing's achievement to the story's core—a narrative that was overwhelmingly credited to Hillary and the British Empire at the time: a glorious redemption of Scott's Antarctic ordeal 41 years earlier and a sign of divine favor for Queen Elizabeth II's upcoming coronation.
